About 4 million tyres are disposed of every year in New Zealand. A few of these are recycled into irrigation hose, jandals or reused for walls. Tyres can also be used in engineering works, as weights on silage pits, racetrack or jetty barriers or processed into materials to become playground mats or industrial flooring. Some tyres are used in landfills as drainage material or as covers.
If you have old tyres, we recommend you contact Tyre Track www.tyretrack.co.nz or tel: 0508 897 397.
Tyre Track is a joint venture between the Motor Trade Association (MTA) and Ministry of the Environment (MfE), local councils and tyre companies.
Tyre Track members can either use an online system or call a free phone number to contact registered transporters, who collect old tyres. The old tyres are delivered to registered storage and disposal points: recyclers, processors and landfills.
Tyre Track monitors the volume and type of tyres and their disposal. This helps recyclers to expand their businesses and potential recyclers to plan new ventures.
